E33: Rothenburg ob der Tauber 11th May

Rothenburg is the main tourist stop along the Romantic Road, often described as impossibly charming, whilst we would agree we think this fine town offers no more than Dinkelsbühl or Nordlingen….P1230786

It does however have the strictest preservation orders in Germany and can at times feel like a medieval theme park….

You can get away from the main throng along the town wall along the sentry walk….

You are also rewarded with lovely rooftop views across the town….

There is an imposing Market Square, on one side are these impressive timbered buildings….

On the other the 14th century Rathaus….

Rothenburg is famous for its Schneeballen, ribbons of dough loosely shaped into balls, deep fried then coated in icing sugar and other delicious sweet goodies….

This impressive array, some of the 23 varieties on offer, visually tempting as they were did not meet our expectations….

We tried the original (simply dusted in icing sugar) and it tasted very bland, its texture was too soft to be a biscuit and too firm to be bread or a doughnut (however you have to try these things!)….

A view as we exited the town of two of the wall gateways….

It would appear from the sign below (seen in all of the medieval towns to date) that tank drivers are limited to 70 kph once they leave the historic cobbled lanes!….
